Spiritual and meditation teacher OSHO said, “All senses are on the same level and there should not be any hierarchy. But you live through the eyes: eighty percent of your life is eye-oriented. This should not be so; a balance has to be restored.”

We do use our eyes so much in today’s modern lifestyle.  We read a lot, use computers, watch tv, text on our phones, and drive.  We all know computers can cause eye strain.  Also, for many hours during the day, most of us are just taking in huge amounts of visual information at a rapid pace, from various sources.  And it requires a lot of energy to process this amount of visual stimulation.  Driving may not seem like it should be taxing, but we are whizzing by objects and making constant decisions about how to respond (speed up, pass a car, turn, avoid a pedestrian, read signs, etc.).  Our brains are working hard when we drive–especially in the city.

We can help balance this by simply resting our eyes.  Notice if you are tired but unable to take a nap, just get into as relaxed a position as you can, and close your eyes for a few minutes.  I think you will be surprised at how amazingly restorative that can be.

Let me know if you try it!
