We had a happy hour event a few weeks ago for the Queen Anne Space Building in Seattle, so the tenants could get to know each other, and it was really fun!  I was reminded how much I just love entrepreneurs.

My dad has had his own diesel parts business since I was 4 yrs. old and he has taken a lot of risks to do his own thing.  While I have had “jobs” over the years, I started out myself as an entrepreneur at about age 7, teaching gymnastics and baton twirling to other neighborhood kids, and leading younger children on nature walks to identify trees for about 10 cents per class!  All throughout my childhood and into my early 20’s, I worked for my dad–answering phones, filing, packaging, driving the forklift, etc.  I even operated an overhead crane to load a 40,000 lb. engine onto a truck where my dad was guiding it into place (glad I didn’t kill him!).  When I was 17, I produced a magazine and went around to bookstores trying to sell it (such a nice woman at the University Bookstore…said she thought it was a little small and might “get lost” on their shelves…and what a nice man with a metaphysical shop who bought a few issues!).  Once during my college years, I bought flowers wholesale to sell on the corner for Valentine’s Day and was quite successful.  9 yrs. ago, I started a massage practice and worked for several years.  Then I took a break to help hubby with his photography biz (http://www.johnmckinney.org/).  We also opened a few art studios and participated in Seattle artwalks to sell hubby’s art.  Now here we are…

So it was really neat when I recently met some of my neighbors, talked to them about their businesses, and went on a tour of their offices!  We have an amazing bodyworker skilled in CranioSacral, SOMA, and Advanced Energy Healing who I have now had sessions with (Martha Nicholson, http://www.iahp.com/marthanicholson/), a very warm and affordable Chinese acupuncturist I have since enjoyed receiving a treatment from (Weihua Wang, http://greenpointacupuncture.net/default.aspx), and a psychotherapist I felt very comfortable with and would not hesitate to see (Eric Candell, http://www.candell.org/practice/index.html).  The building also houses many other lovely people I look forward to getting to know better, including a naturopath, a physical therapist, a few attorneys, an editor/writer, a few estheticians, and a few more massage therapists.

Oh, and I got to try a delicious chocolate cupcake with mint frosting from Wink Cupcakes, which is on the retail level (http://winkcupcakes.com/)–I love anything mint!

Maybe you could offer baton twirling lessons to Queen Anne youngsters on your “off days.” You know, passing the “baton” of entrepreneurship to your students in the process. Sounds reasonable to me. Then again, maybe that’s just my own entrepreneurialism talking. 🙂
